Ecological factors affecting the structure, diversity, and specialisation of caterpillar communities in forest ecosystems
SEIFERT, Carlo Lutz
The aim of the thesis was to explore how caterpillar assemblages are spatially, functionally, and taxonomically structured in temperate and tropical forest ecosystems. Firstly, we investigated to what extent caterpillar assemblages are vertically structured in a temperate forest in eastern North America. By using a comprehensive dataset of temperate forest sites across three continents, we further examined if distance metrics derived from plant phylogeny can be used to predict structural changes in caterpillar assemblages among co-occurring plants. We further studied if folivorous caterpillars associated with bamboo in an Ecuadorian montane rainforest can be considered as 'classical' herbivores (sensu stricto). In the last chapter, we introduce and compare plot-based sampling approaches to study interaction networks in forest ecosystems and provide comprehensive guidelines for replication in future studies.
Lobbying: Microeconomic Evidence
Rott, Robert ; Gregor, Martin (advisor) ; Chytilová, Julie (referee)
The present thesis is an empirical analysis of lobbying in the United States. First, it analyses an added value of lobbyists' specialisation and connections to congressmen using a method of matching. Second, it extends the analysis by studying the impact of competition for access to congressmen on the added value of lobbyists. Third, it analyses lobbying from the point of view of congressmen by studying the impact of their specialisation on committee assignments on the amount of campaign financing they obtain from lobbyists. The analysis is done using data about lobbying reports as well as committee assignments of congressmen and campaign contributions they obtain from lobbyists in the 106th to 110th congress, corresponding to years 1999-2008. The present thesis also provides a brief summary of related literature analysing different aspects of lobbying.
Political connections in public procurement: a supply side analysis
Počarovský, Jiří ; Skuhrovec, Jiří (advisor) ; Janský, Petr (referee)
1 Abstract The public procurement market that accounts for a significant share of the Czech GDP represents an institution of high rent-seeking motive and corruption potential. Donations to political parties can be used as an indirect linkage between political parties and firms as potential suppliers of public contracts. We analyse whether connections and donations influence the number of supplied contracts, volume of supplied contracts and the number of bidders in the tendering process. Furthermore the impact of donations and connections on firms' performance and profitability is assessed. We identify significant effects on number of contracts, volume of contracts, dependence on revenues from contracts and number of bidders of both giving donations and history of employing a politically active person.

Spatial Concentration, Specialization and Economic Growth
Uhlířová, Petra ; Čadil, Jan (advisor) ; Vltavská, Kristýna (referee)
In various regions, the number of employees working in each sector is different. Some sectors may be in the region employ more workers than other sectors, indicating a higher degree of specialization. In each region, the degree of specialization varies, which could have a direct impact on economic growth. The aim of this study was therefore to investigate the relationship between the degree of specialization and economic growth of the region. It turns out that there is a positive relationship between the degree of specialization and economic growth, which means that the growth rate of specialization will lead to economic growth. It follows that the focus of the region, especially on one sector can lead to faster economic growth.
